Birding Day Tours in San Martin de los Andes

We guide full and half day birding outings for small groups. All tours include transportation, binoculars, field guides and certified birding guide. Food and drinks can be included upon request.

 

Suggested gear: discrete-coloured trekking clothes, sun cap or hat, trekking shoes, sun protector, water and some snacks.

FULL DAY TOURS

 

COLLON CURA RIVER VALLEY

Probably the most important hotspot in Patagonia for the great amount species that can be found. An aquatic environment surrounded by the steppe and with the presence of many species from the pampas. We will leave early in the morning by Route 40 to Junin de los Andes, doing several stops along the way looking for Patagonian steppe endemics and several raptors like black-chested buzzard eagle, red-backed hawk and southern crested caracara. After passing by Junin de los Andes we will continue to La Rinconada, stopping on the Many-colored Rush-Tyrant (Tachuris rubrigastra)lagoons on the side of the road and on a viewpoint where we will look for Andean condors. After crossing Collon Cura River we will follow its course with several stops to see upland geese, Chilean flamingo, two-banded plover, coscoroba  swan and several species of ducks and coots. On the reeds we will look for the many-colored rush-tyrant, wren-like rushbird and yellow-winged blackbird. After a picnic by the river we will take a dirt road that goes through the steppe. There we can see guanacos, lesser rheas and several earthcreepers and canasteros.

 

THE SEVEN LAKES ROUTEVolcán Lanín

The most classic day tour in Patagonia’s Lake District, but we do it as a birding tour. We will go from San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura passing by lakes Lácar, Machónico, Falkner, Villarino, Espejo, Correntoso and nahuel Huapi. On the dense forest and on the lakes we can find species like Bicolored Hawk, Thorn-tailed Rayadito, Green-backed Firecrown, Patagonian Sierra-Finch, Chilean Pigeon, Austral Thrush, Ashy-headed Goose and Flying Steamer-Duck, among many others.

 

LANIN VOLCANO BASE & TROMEN LAKE

Day tour from San Martin de los Andes to the Lanin volcano base. We will leave early in the morning by Route 40 Magellanic woodpecker, male (Campephilus magellanicus)direction north, stopping at Quilquihue and Chimehuin rivers. Along the way we will enjoy the great landscapes of the Patagonian steppe and look for raptors like black-chested buzzard eagle, red-backed hawk and American kestrel. After passing by Junin de los Andes we will take route 23 to Malleo River and then route 60 towards the Chilean border. Driving by Malleo River we will have great views of the east slope of Lanin volcano. After 25 km we will enter Lanin National Park, going through a pure Monkey-puzzle tree forest and with the impressive presence of the volcano on the background. We will leave the vehicle at the park ranger’s office and from there take two short hikes: one to a mature forest of southern beeches, where we will look for the Magellanic woodpecker and another one to the Tromen Lake, looking for Patagonian forest endemics such us Austral parakeet, chucao tapaculo, black-throated huet-huet and Magellanic tapaculo.

HALF DAY TOURS

 

LAGUNA ROSALES

Soft hike around this gorgeous lagoon in Lanin National Park, just a few minutes away from San Martín de los Andes. The trail is part of Huella Andina a net of trails that connect the different national parks of the Andean Patagonia. Along the way we will go through several environments: open areas of transition from steppe to forest with prevalence of Cauquén Común - Upland Goose (Chloephaga picta)shrubs and grasslands, Patagonian forest patches and meadows and aquatic environments in the lagoon and its surrounding areas. On each of them we can observe different bird species, which we will identify using the field guides. Among them we can find several Patagonia endemics, such as ashy-headed geese, black-faced Ibis, Chilean flicker, thorn-tailed rayadito, white-throated tree-runner, chucao tapaculo,black-throated huet-huet, white-crested elaenia, Patagonian sierra-finch and fire-eyed diucon. If the weather is good we will enjoy a picnic by the lagoon.   

 

CHAPELCO MASSIF

Chapelco Massif, San Martin de los Andes, Patagonia, ArgentinaWe will drive to the base of the ski resort and from there take a forestry trail along the valley that splits Chapelco Grande Peak from the ski resort. Here we will look for endemic species of the Andean-Patagonian forest like austral parakeet, chucao tapaculo, black-throated huet-huet, Des Mur’s Wiretail and Patagonian sierra-finch. We will leave the vehicle by a meadow and continue walking towards the high Andean grasslands where we will enjoy the wonderful views of the Chapelco Massif. It is a rocky mountain mass stretching for more than 20 km from San Martin de los Andes to Meliquina Lake. Its rocks have a volcanic origin, with plenty of basaltic rocks that were later carved by the action of the glaciers. On the southern beech forest we will look for the iconic Magellanic woodpecker and once we pass the timberline we will have good opportunities to see Andean condor, least Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus)seedsnipe, yellow bridled-finch, plumbeous sierra-finch and several ground tyrants and miners. After a picnic in the Andean grasslands we will take our way back to San Martin de los Andes.

 

 

LA VEGA WETLAND

An urban natural reserve just 10 minutes away from the town centre. On a short walk across by the grasslands we can find species like Black-faced Ibis, Ashy-headed Goose, Long-tailed Meadowlark, Spectacled Tyrant, Grass Wren, Corredera Pipit and Cireneous Harrier. In the lagoons there are Southern Wigeon, Silver Teal, Red-gartered Coot, Brown-hooded Gull, South American Stilt and Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, among many others.Black-faced Ibis (Theristicus melanopis)
